Remember, nobody is born with knowledge, it’s acquired through learning, understanding, and practising. ![]() But the key skills you develop while studying maths are what’s important problem-solving, logical thinking and mathematical reasoning apply to every area of life. You may think that knowing how to simplify surds or factorise an expression is irrelevant in the real world. Because for us adults, it’s easy to forget just how tricky school can be, particularly for youngsters studying that most dreaded of subjects: maths. With schools set to reopen this month, we thought now was as good a time as any to see how much you can remember from your days in the classroom. From algebra to trigonometry, and probability to differentiation, students are expected to grapple with a range of equations and logic – the likes of which a lot of people would struggle with. If it’s been a while since you’ve taken GCSE Maths, A-Level Maths, or even A-level Further Maths, you might be curious about what the curriculum is like these days. Now, though, after months of playing teacher at home, many mums and dads will have a new-found respect for just how tough school can be. What time should you set off?ħ.In March 2020, most parents probably had only a vague idea of what their kids were learning in the classroom. Notwithstanding a muddy bog and a field of unfriendly cows, you plan to complete your seven-mile pre-pub lunch ramble in time to claim your table at 1pm. But there’s an issue: your well-thumbed recipe requires 10.5oz sugar, 40.5fl oz of milk and 1.5oz of cornflour and the available scales are metric. You’ve promised to make your grandmother’s famous blancmange for your friends during a weekend away in an Airbnb. Do you also need to buy that knitted waistcoat to get your extra 10% off?Ĥ. You’ve seen a jumper for £70, some slacks for £60. There’s a sale on at your favourite clothes shop – 25% off all knitwear, 20% off trousers with an extra 10% if your final discounted shop goes over £100. A one litre bottle of orange juice costs £1.80. A 3-for-2 deal at the supermarket promises three 500ml cartons of orange juice, priced at £1.55. Laura ordered the steak at £25, Rosie, the pasta at £18 and Bob a salad at £12, while they all shared a bottle of wine at £30. Luckily, not all mathematic problems are relevant to everyday life – but can you solve the ones that are? Questionsġ.
